Nested Labels in Gmail
Few days back i was looking into the Gmail Labs, there I found lot of goodies for Gmail feature enhancement. One of the features, which I wanted to have in the Gmail is “Nested Lables”. In Gmail these labels are used to tag the email. For example If I am receiving email bank statement from “CitiBank” every month. Then I can tag that email to lable as “CitiBank”. Once we create the label in gmail it will be available in the left side of your gmail page.
If you do not know how to create a "Label" in Gmail, follow the below steps
How to create lables in Gmail
Select the mail which you want to tag the label ( In this Example I have selected the HDFC Bank Email)

Click on the Labels.

Be default Google is having Personal, Receipts, Travel and Work labels. If you want to use that label check the corresponding label. In this example am going to create new label as “HDFC”. Click on “Create New” to create new label

It opens small window as “popup”, Enter the label in the input box and click “OK”. The created label will be available as shown below.

This feature most of the GMail user knows and they are using it effectively. But the feature want I wanted to explain is nested labels, it means labels within labels. How this will be useful, Lets say I have multiple bank accounts and every month receiving the bank statement from them. If you want to tag the email as label with different categories, and want to have parent and child categories, then this nested label feature will be useful.Try this feature in GMail and you will come to know the advantage of this feature. Follow the step by step to add this feature in GMail
Step 1: click on "settings" in the top right side.

Step 2 : Click on "Labs".

Step 3 : Go to "Nested Labels" feature and click on the enable option.

Step 4 : Also enable the Navbar drag and drop feature(It will be useful to arrange the labels).

Step 5 : click on "Save Changes" in the bottom.

Step 6 : I want to create structure of the label as mentioned below
–> BANK
–> HDFC
–> CITIBANK
I have two emails in inbox, one email want to tag it as "HDFC" and other one "CITIBANK". First we will create the structure then we will move the emails to the correct label.
Step 7: Click on the "Labels" and select the "Manage Labels"

Step 8 : Create new label "BANK" in the input box and click on "Create".

Step 9: Created BANK will be show in the below screen. Now we want to create new label "HDFC" and should be nested within the BANK label.
In the input box enter "BANK/HDFC", BANK it refers to the root label and HDFC refers to the child label of the BANK. The "/" is required to create nested label to create parent and child labels. Likewise you can create nested labels depth as mush as you want.

Step 10 : Similarly I have created one more label "CITIBANK" within "BANK"

Step 11: Now we have nested label structure as shown below. Gmail shows the nested labels as tree structure, using this you can expand and collapse the tree.

Step 12: Incase if the nested label is not visible in the left side due to other label placement in that position, then that label will be available in the "more" section.

Click on the more and drag and drop the labels.
Step 13 : Finally we move the email to the respective label.

Select the checkbox, click on labels and select the "BANK/HDFC" option and click on "Apply". You tagged your mail to the HDFC nested label.
Step 14 : In case if you do not wish to keep that email in the "inbox", then select the checkbox and click on "Archive" to the nested label.

To verify click on the nested label in the left side.

I hope this series of steps to configure this feature in your gmail and use it effectively.
Thanks to Google to providing this feature.
Let me know if you find any issues.
